Originally developed to treat tubal disease, IVF has become the number one therapy for infertility, regardless of the underlying cause. In IVF treatment, eggs are retrieved from the woman's ovaries and fertilized by partner sperm in the laboratory. The resulting embryos are then transferred to the woman's uterus for pregnancy.

The IVF Process – Step by Step
IVF treatment with Dr. Hanna follows a carefully designed process to maximize your chances of success. Here are the five key steps:

Step 1: Ovarian Stimulation with Fertility Medications
IVF patients take injectable medications such as Gonal F, Follistim, and Menopur to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple quality eggs. Stimulated egg quality is superior to unstimulated oocytes often used in 'natural' cycles.
Treatment progress is monitored with sonograms and blood tests during frequent office visits. Ovarian stimulation is completed with a final injection of HCG (Profasi, Ovidrel) given 32–36 hours before egg retrieval.
A rare complication is ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), which occurs when the patient overreacts to fertility medications. Our team closely monitors each patient to minimize this risk.
Step 2: Egg Retrieval
Egg retrieval is a minor surgical procedure performed under anesthesia (sedation) administered by a Board-Certified Anesthesiologist. Eggs are aspirated from the ovaries and transferred to the Embryology Lab.
Retrieved eggs are then inseminated with partner sperm, or a single sperm is injected directly into the egg using ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection).
Step 3: Fertilization
Fertilization is the most critical part of any IVF cycle. It occurs in the laboratory in a special dish containing nutrient-rich media to support and nourish growing embryos. Embryos develop in laboratory incubators with optimal conditions for temperature, humidity, and CO2 gas levels.
Within five days after fertilization, embryos with the highest implantation potential reach the blastocyst stage and are transferred into the woman's uterus.
We use advanced laser technology attached to high-power microscopes to increase precision for ICSI, assisted hatching, and embryo biopsy — practically eliminating tissue damage.
Step 4: Embryo Transfer
Embryos can be transferred as early as two days after fertilization (cleavage stage) or as late as five to six days (blastocyst transfer). On Day 5, the best blastocysts are placed in the woman's uterus.
Embryo transfer is often combined with assisted hatching (AH), especially for older women. AH creates a small opening in the embryo's outer shell (Zona Pellucida) to facilitate implantation.
Assisted Hatching (AH)
AH is an IVF laboratory procedure performed right before embryo transfer that involves creating a small opening in the outer shell of the embryo, called Zona Pellucida. AH facilitates embryo hatching and attachment to the uterine lining.
Blastocyst transfer combined with AH gives embryos the best chances to implant and produce a successful pregnancy.
Single Embryo Transfer (SET)
Transferring a single blastocyst is strongly recommended by SART to eliminate the risks of multiple pregnancies. Multiple pregnancies carry increased risks for both mothers and babies.
Embryo Biopsy (EB)
EB involves removing a small piece of the embryo for genetic screening. While performed by some clinics, routine EB is not mandated and its need remains controversial due to potential embryo damage.
Step 5: Pregnancy Testing
A quantitative blood pregnancy test completes each IVF cycle. A positive result indicates embryo implantation and successful IVF treatment. Blood tests are more accurate than urine tests and are used to monitor early pregnancy progress.

Yes. Older women benefit more from having IVF as their primary therapy. Even though IVF success decreases with age, other treatments are much LESS successful
