Sperm Washings for insemination (IUI) is a laboratory processing before sperm is injected into the women uterus. Sperm cells are separated from the seminal fluid and placed in medium solution enriched with proteins, vitamins and other factors that improve sperm quality.
Sperm Incubation with nutritious media enhances sperm functional capacity and boosts vital motility (movement) necessary for sperm swim to reach and fertilize women egg.
Dr. Hanna Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a medical procedure that introduces washed and concentrated sperm into women uterus (womb):
- Patient is placed on the exam table with stirrups (like for a PAP-smear collection).
- Speculum — instrument is put inside vagina.
- Insemination catheter, a sterile, narrow plastic tubing loaded with washed sperm is passed through the cervix, high into uterus where sperm is injected.
- From the uterus, sperm travels into fallopian tubes to fertilize egg brought there by fimbria. Fertilized egg travels to the uterus ready to implant and produce pregnancy.
Timing of The Insemination (IUI) Performed During Fertile Window
Natural cycle with ovulation prediction testing is used most to time IUI. Ovulation tracking Apps became popular tool to help women find her FERTILE WINDOW, when her egg is most mature and IUI most likely to succeed.
Ovulation Apps offer clear instructions with useful examples, supporting websites and often community chats. Apps are accurate and usually utilize:
- Calculations based on previous cycles
- Basal body temperature measurements
- Cervical mucus changes
- Ovulation predictors (by testing saliva and urine), are MOST ACCURATE!
If ovulation is irregular or infrequent, medications for ovulation induction are recommended.
Insemination Success and Pregnancy Rates
Chances for each IUI treatment to produce pregnancy is 15% and it may take several attempts before successful conception. Pregnancy rates decrease with age and with lower quality eggs.
After four (4) failed IUI attempts, chances for pregnancy using inseminations are very low.
